Guildenstern wonders when he passed the point where he could have stopped the series of events that has brought him to this point. He does not even seem to understand that what he has wanted all along was freedom: Who could feel sorry for a character who cannot tell the difference between a lantern and the rising sun.
But while in this wholesale re-jigging of a classic text was daring, the fact that such writerly antics are now standard practice has lent recent productions a faded air. Guide dogs are allowed into the auditorium. After many false starts they eventually find Hamlet, who leaves with the King.
They cannot decide whether he is insane. The set was as sparse as the verbal wit was thick, which worked well to keep the focus on the words—a necessity in keeping up with the banter.
The Player cries out and falls, apparently dead. Guildenstern tries to look on the bright side, while Rosencrantz makes it clear that the pair had made no progress, that Hamlet had entirely outwitted them.
The next morning, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern awake and hear music coming from barrels onboard the ship. He disappears as well. If it feels odd that the men in the play have but a handful of spoken lines and serve primarily as adornments and objects of desire, ask yourself why it feels that way.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two minor characters in Hamlet, a play written around Hamlet has a minor part, mostly dashing in and out. The somewhat low budget appearance of the production, as opposed to being a detriment, actually adds an endearing and introspective quality to the film, as if meant to look like it was being performed by a low budget theater group.
